A class of anti-submarine large frigates, built in the late 1990s for the Russian Navy. The class was designed as a replacement for the 1000-ton Grisha class corvette, but thanks to a rather serious case of overengineering, they ended up as major surface combatants verging on destroyer size.
They use a COGAG (Combined Gas And Gas) propulsion arrangement, with 2 cruise turbines providing 20000 shp and 2 boost turbines at 37000 shp. Used together, the ship can attain speeds of up to 30 knots on two shafts. Their main armament consists of six fixed 533mm torpedo tubes in the superstructure, which can fire either Type 53 multipurpose torpedoes or SS-N-15 Starfish anti-sub missiles. Air defense consists of four eight-cell VLS clusters for SA-N-9 Gauntlet short-range SAMs and two CADS-N-1 Kashtan mounts. Two RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers and an AK-100 100mm/70 automatic gun round out the armament. They can also carry 16 SS-N-25 Switchblade medium anti-ship missiles; however, the first unit commissioned, RFS Neustrashimy has not been seen with the launchers installed. Finally, they have a hangar and flight deck for one Kamov Ka-27 Helix ASW helicopter.
Three units were laid down, but due to serious cost overruns, only one was ever finished. The other two were scrapped before launching. The one remaining unit is part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
Update: Ending in 2007, the Russian Navy finished construction on one of the other two Neustrashimy class hulls (which was incorrectly believed to be scrapped). This vessel, Yaroslav Mudry, completed testing and joined the Black Sea Fleet in early 2008. It is outfitted similarly to Neustrashimy, but is believed to be equipped with two (possibly four) quad launchers for SS-N-25 Switchblade missiles.
