Neil deMause is the author of several pieces of interactive fiction, including Lost New York, an epic-length piece of shareware dealing with his interest in issues related to New York City; The Frenetic Five vs. Sturm und Drang, a superhero adventure which took 13th place in the 1997 IFComp and won the Xyzzy award for "Best NPCs"; and The Frenetic Five vs. Mr. Redundancy Man, "Sturm und Drang"'s sequel.
As a journalist, deMause primarily focuses on issues related to New York City, his hometown. He is an editor of (and a regular contributor to) Here magazine, a magazine dealing with the controversies and issues confronted by specific locations. (Several other authors of interactive fiction have also contributed to the 'zine on occasion, including Adam Cadre and David Dyte.)
Neil deMause is also the author (with Joanna Cagan) of Field of Schemes: How the Great Stadium Swindle Turns Public Money into Private Profit (revised edition, 1999), which addresses the way that sports teams use corporate welfare for their own benefit.
