(Sanskrit: "The Seventy Tales of the Parrot")

One of the most famous and popular collections of fairy tales in Sanskrit, dating (probably) from the 12th century. The original text is lost, but a number of different versions of the work have been transmitted.

In the Sukasaptati, a parrot tells a story every evening for 70 days. Every evening, the parrot's audience, a young woman with a craving for entertainment, called Prabhavati, listens so intently that she forgets to keep an amorous rendezvous with her lover. Every day, she arranges another rendezvous, only to be captivated by the parrot's tales.
