French sinologist. Born ca. 1797, died 1873.
From 1832, Stanislas Julien was professor of Chinese at the Collège de France in Paris. Julien is famous for his many translations of Chinese works of philosophy, drama, literature and science. Among these are works on (for instance), silk production, and a multitude of linguistic monographs, such as Méthode pour déchiffrer et transcrire les nom sanscrits qui se rencontrent dans les livres chinois (1861) and Syntaxe nouvelle de la langue chinoise (1869-1870). Today, his works are chiefly of interest to historians.
