Political party active in the Danish autonomous region of Greenland.
Siumut began in 1976 as scattered local voter associations, and was formally founded as a party the following year. Siumut's political platform is social democratic, anti-EU and in favour of expanding regional autonomy, with a view to eventual indpendence for Greenland.
From its founding, Siumut has been one of the largest parties in Greenland, and has enjoyed representation in the Landsråd, the Landsting, and the Danish Folketing. Since regional autonomy was introduced, in 1979, Siumut has held continual leadership in Greenland, with varying coalition partners.
