Russian Statesman and military officer. Born 1825, died 1888.

Loris-Melikov, who was of Armenian descent, participated in Russia's conquest of the Caucasus in the 1850s, in the Crimean War and in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. In 1879, he was appointed governor general of Astrakhan, Saratov, Samara and Kharkov.

As Russian minister of the interior, from 1880 to 1881, he sought to defeat the revolutionary movements while working for a liberal reform policy.
