Flaminius has been treated unkindly by posterity, chiefly because he often acted in direct contravention of Senate decisions, and because he lost the battle of Lake Trasimeno (217 BCE) to Hannibal.
The only positive note in his historical reputation is the fact that he caused to be constructed a major Roman thoroughfare, the Via Flaminia, which is named for him.
