The largest member of the modern string family (not counting the octobass), the double bass is tuned in fourths (i.e. E-A-D-G) as opposed to the other string instruments which are tuned in fifths (i.e. G-D-A-E).
It is played in symphony orchestras and is not predominant in chamber music.
