The Housatonic River flows 149 miles from its source in western Massachusetts to its end at Milford Point, Ct. on Long Island Sound.

The mainstream of the Housatonic River is formed by the joining of the East and West branches of the Housatonic at Pittsfield,Ma.

The East branch begins at Muddy Pond in Hinsdale,Ma. and the West is formed by the outflow of Pontoosuc Lake in Lanesboro,Ma.

Along the course of the river you will find many class 3 and class 4 rapids as well as lazy, floatable flatwater. In Falls Village,Ct there is a nice set of class 6 rapids called Rattle Snake Rapids.

While being a great place to fish only catch and release is recommended due to the pumping of PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyl) contaminated oil by the General Electric plant in Pittsfield,Ma.
