also known as Mahanuwara. It is a 10 day/10 night festival in Kandy, Ceylon, in the lunar month of Esala, the exact dates of which are determined by the temple astrologers. Kandy was the last citadel of the Sinhala Kings, and the festival honors the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha with a nightly procession (perahera) and the burning of coconuts.
