Gilgai is of Australian Aboriginal origin and is used to descibe a characteristic of high shrink swell clay soils.

Essentially gilgai are the microrelief of soils caused by their expansion and contraction due to changes in soil moisture. These are exhibited as microknolls and microbasins in very nearly level areas.
