Karte Mate is literally "Mother of Cards," though she's really the Mother of Chance. She, like the deity of chance in other cultures, is mischevious and cunning, oo! She, too, is part of the trinity with Laima and Dekla Mate; basically, the Latvian Fates, though I'm still not clear on what her job is.
