Another name for peat, which is the precursory form of dead plant parts before it turns into real coal.
It is a lesser energy source than real coal, but is more easy to come by, because it is excavated from 10-20 meters below the soil surface. It is typically found in old bogs and moors.
The brown colour comes from the acid environment usually found in bogs and moors, hence the name.
