Barossa and McLaren Vale are two of the better known wine growing regions in southern Australia. Barossa is about 50 km east of Adelaide and consists of the Barossa and Eden valleys, divided by the Barossa range. The region was settled in the early 1840s by immigrants largely from Prussia and Silesia.
There are almost 50 wineries in the regions. Better known premium wineries include Elderton, Peter Lehmann, Veritas and Yalumba Wine Company. Penfolds sources most of the grape for their Penfolds Grange from Barossa and McLaren. Penfolds has a winery in Nuriootpa, Barossa (the second location, Magill Estate is close to downtown Adelaide).
