One of the less
admirable traits of the
Finnish character is
envy. Public display of
wealth and taking
pride in your
own achievements are considered
sin of the worst kind,
and especially in the countryside the show-off will be
ostracized, with the neighbors eagerly awaiting the moment of
their enemy's
downfall. When (if) it happens, they will
nod knowingly to themselves, smile with
Schadenfreude and
recall the words of
Ezekiel 16:
49. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom,
pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her
and her daughters ...
50. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me:
therefore I took them away as I saw good.
