King of Kent 673-685

Hlothere was the elder of the two sons of Earconbert who had ruled Kent until his death in 664, but was cast aside in favour of his brother Ecgbert I. When Ecgbert I died in the year of 673 Hlothere came to the throne of Kent but suffered from the challenge of Eadric, son of Ecgbert I who believed he was the rightful heir to the kingdom.

In time Eadric was successful, as Hlothere died on the 6th February 685 from the wounds he received in battle and Edric the son of Ecgbert I came to be king.
