King of East Anglia c796

Of Eadwald the following can be said, that coinage has been discovered recording the name of such a man that ruled as king in East Anglia around the year 796.

From which it is surmised, that following the death of the Mercian overlord King Offa in 796, East Anglia enjoyed a brief period of independence, before once again falling under the Mercian yoke in the form of King Coenwulf.

An apology: it is unfortunate that our friend Eadwald is known only from the few recovered coins that bear his name and his claim to regality over East Anglia. His date of birth and death are unknown, neither his ancestry nor his ultimate fate are known to us.
