Maes Howe (the recent, but incorrect spelling of
Maeshowe)is a
stone-age burial mound in
Orkney. As well as being a fascinating construction aligned in such a way that the Sun shines down the entrance hall at the time of the
Winter Solstice, it is remarkable for the
Viking grafitti left by raiders in the 12th century.
Exactly the same sort of thing you might expect to be left on a wall today - including comments like "Ofram the son of Sigurd carved these runes" and descriptions of certain ladies: Ingebjork and Ingegerth.
