Many They Might Be Giants fans are used to seeing this smiling head, but few know who it is. The face of a friendly looking man appears in the video for "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head", on the "Don't Let's Start" CD single and video, as props in several concerts, as well as on a TMBG shirt. Who IS this happy gentleman?
The smiling man is none other then William Allen White (Feb. 10, 1868 - Jan. 29, 1944), Pulitzer Prize winning writer and journalist. He was Editorial manager of the Kansas City Star from 1892 to 1895. After that, he edited and published The Emporia Gazette until his death in 1944. He was known as "The Sage of Emporia" through his warm humanistic columns, epitomizing the middle-class.
