Hertog Jan is a Dutch beer named after the famous Jan of Brabant
. It was first brewed in 1981. He apparently was quite fond of beer-and brewer's daughters- and the Arcen
brewery named one of their pilsener lager
s after him. This particular lager has a rather strong taste, which is due to the use of Saazerhop in the brewing process. Furthermore, grain is added, which makes the brewing process a bit different than that from most lagers.
The result is a beer that is among the favorites of Dutch beer drinkers. It's a bit more expensive than most supermarket lagers, like Heineken or Grolsch, but the gentle, bittersweet taste more than compensates for this. If you find the average pilsener a bit too weak-tasting, you will love this. It's also my personal favorite.
