Masaccio was the first really great artist of the renaissance. He helped to invent the idea of perspective in art. He was very revolutionary, surpassing all of his peers at the time in realism. He died very young, leaving only about 4 paintings that can be completely attributed to him. His frescoes in the Brancacci chapel are considered his masterworks, especially the Tribute Money, and The Expulsion from Paradise. The raw emotion in Expulsion from Paradise makes it his best in my mind. The emotional pain of Adam and Eve is represented externally in such a powerfully striking way that leaves the viewer deeply effected.
