Transaxles are generally located in the front of a car. This is because sports cars that have rear-engine designs account for a small percent of all cars sold, and a large percent of automobiles in the world are front wheel drive. The engines in these cars are transverse, such that the crankshaft is parallel to the half shafts that drive the front two wheels. The transaxle is connected between the engine and the half shafts to drive the front wheels. Many all wheel drive cars also employ a transversely mounted engine and transaxle, and uses what is called a transfer assembly or transfer case attached to the transaxle. This uses a bevel gear to transfer the torque 90 degrees to a driveshaft which is attached to a differential in the rear.
