Ιαπυξ
The hero whose name was adopted by the Iapyges in southern Italy. There are various stories about his origin. Some claimed that he was the son of Lycaon and the brother of Daunus (or Daunius) and Peucetius. Others said that he was a Cretan, the son of DAEDALUS and a Cretan wife, and that he went to Sicily and then southern Italy as a result of the events which followed the death of MINOS. Iapyx was said to have been the leader of the Cretans who had followed Minos; after the latter's death they tried unseccessfully to return to Crete. They were caught in a storm and forced to land in the Tarentum district, where they established themselves. A variation of this story simply said that Iapyx was a Cretan who was the brother of ICADIUS. He went to southern Italy whereas his brother was carried off by a dolphin to the foot of Mount Parnassus, where he founded Delphi.
