Αρισταιος

The poet of Proconnesus, a character half mythical and half historical who died in a fuller's workshop. When his friends came to look for his body it could not be found but on the same day some travellers arrived in the town and said that on their way they had met Aristeas going toward Cyzicus. He used to appear at different times in different places. Seven years after his supposed death Aristeas returned and wrote his poem, the Armaspes. During his seven years' absence he was said to have gone with Apollo to the mysterious land of the Hyperboreans. Once his poem was finished, he disappeared again.
