Mike is standing outside in the rain

smoking a dart, trying to lean under cover of a neighbor's back porch

wet streetlight glisten off his glasses

Susan is sitting in her car,  parked a block away

the blue light of her phone shines on her face

she is intent,  head tilted to one side

Billy is closing up the diner,  putting all the chairs onto tables

turning off lights, one at at a time

except the neon sign that says EATS

almost two AM,   a single lightbulb in my kitchen flickers

I'm looking out the window of my apartment

I don't have any place to go; everyone I know is asleep
