Late on Wednesday he knocked on the door
but no one answered, so
Not wanting to pry
he went back home
He returned three days later
finally
walking to the back door which was
open
He followed a trail of groceries into the kitchen
finding
a loaf of bread
thawed bag of frozen waffles
a few apples and
upside down
a box of eggs, some left in the carton, others
scattered across the kitchen floor
including
a single one resting next to the legs of
the man who was
no longer his neighbor
