Post-mortem is also used more generally to refer to any sort of examination done after the fact. For example, in competetive chess, after a game the players will sit together and do a post-mortem by going over the moves and sharing their observations with one another. Or in business, after a big deal has gone through, it's standard procedure to do a post-mortem to see what was anticiapted, what were the results and what accounts for the differences between the two.
