Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories.

It is also the name of a small, almost extinct, First Nations tribe from the Great Slave Lake region, also known as the T'atsaot'ine. The name Yellowknife derives from their use of yellow copper in making knives and other tools. In the late eighteenth and early ninteenth centuries the Yellowknife were almost wiped out by a series of lost wars against the Dogrib. Today there are only about 500 alive.
