Mouth Magazine is one of the few magazines I've found dedicated to the
civil and
human rights of
disabled people. It is an empowering and challenging read not only for
disabled people and their
loved ones, but for anyone who cares about human rights and challenging
ethical issues. One of the ideas I like from the writing style is the way they call non-disabled people the "temporarily able-bodied."
One of the things you might not expect about this magazine: It is funny. It is also witty, topical, well written, and well researched. The rights of disabled people are rarely discussed in mainstream media, or even in the alternative press, which is strange, since this should be one issue everyone has a personal stake in. Most people won't change race or gender in their lifetimes, but a great many of us who are now healthy could find ourselves chronically ill or injured one day.
