A Bright Red Scream: Self-mutilation and the Language of Pain ·
Marilee Strong, author

(Book) Published 1998 by Viking Penguin.

A sympathetic, journalistic treatment of self-mutilation, and its likely causes. The author came to the subject following a period spent covering war victims in Mozambique, and sees certain parallels between the often hidden, but not-uncommon practice of self-mutilation and the sorts of things she saw in her coverage of war's aftermath and its side effects on those subjected to its stresses and strains.

The book includes numerous resources for those who suffer with self-mutilation. The book attempts to cover current medical and psychological theories related to self-mutilation, as well as its ties to childhood sexual abuse, the psychobiology of trauma, eating disorders, body alienation and paths to healing.
