Hobby or
obsession where you must reach the highest points in a given geographic
area: in the
United States,
highpointers set out to bag the highest
point in each of the fifty states. This could involve a drive on a
highway (
Delaware), a
train ride (Mt. Washington,
New Hampshire), a strenuous hike, or in the case of
Washington,
Oregon,
Montana, and
Wyoming,
rock climbing and/or
glacier travel.
Alaska, of course, includes the world class mountain,
Mt. McKinley.
(Before you go: search and rescue operations by the Park Service in Denali are conducted on a discretionary basis. Bring a sweater.).
For the truly obsessed, highpointer Andy Martin publishes a guide to the highest points in
America by
county- all 3140 of them.
Because it's there.
