stock exchange. Instead, sales are done directly via the
telephone or
computer. Some stocks and
bonds are listed on the
New York Stock Exchange but nevertheless traded over the counter. The
Nasdaq is an example of an over the counter
market--it has no central physical location.
The phrase refers to direct trading, as in a retail store where payment was made over a real counter.
