One of the big burst of independent comic book companies to burst on the scene in the early 80s, Eclipse published a wide range of creator-owned comics material, helping to expand the range of the field which had previously stagnated under corporate-controlled publishers like Marvel and DC which used work-for-hire contracts to ensure the creators didn't own anything they created. Unfortunately, a wave of booms, busts, explosions, and implosions over the years since haven't been kind to many independent publishers, and most have ceased publication.
