James A. M. Whistler (1834-1903) : American painter associated (but mostly unrelated) to the Impressionist movement. Better known for his flamboyance than for his paintings, he still introduced a Japanese influence and a strong understanding of color in composition to the art world. I personally like his watercolors, which feature delicate linework with small swatches of color; he made a nearly black-and-white picture seem full of color.
