Because Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers was the first African American to play Major League Baseball, and since he was a Hall of Fame caliber player, he was quite famous. In 1999 Major League Baseball choose his number to be the first number retired (not to be used in the future) for all teams, all at the same time. Four active players who had the number at the time were allowed to keep the number.
