I grew up in rural upstate New York. Our house was surrounded by a maple forest on one side and a cow pasture on the other. We allowed the local farmers to graze their cows on our land and they had the effect of keeping all the low growing plants and saplings mowed to the ground. As a result, the forest floor was open and uncluttered between the towering trunks of the trees. It gave one the sense of being in a roomy cathedral.
