Sublime and marvellous sweet (candy to the Americans) made in Wigan in the north west of England. They are small, brown, very minty, have 'Uncle' embossed on one side, 'Joe' on the other and are utterly delicious.

They were first made by Ellen Santus in 1898 with brown cane sugar, peppermint oils, cream of tartar - and the obligatory 'secret formula'. The stuff is then boiled in big vats over gas fires. They are still made in exactly the same way.

I cannot describe how fabulous they are. Buy lots.
