When allocating arrows, the Unicode committee didn't leave enough expansion space for future arrows. Thus two new code blocks, Supplemental Arrows A and Supplemental Arrows B, were added for version 3.2. They are part of the Unicode 3.2 effort to offer complete suppport for ISO TR 9573-13.

The long arrows encoded in the range U+27F5 to U+27FF map to standard SGML entity sets supported by MathML. Long arrows represent distinct semantics from their short counterparts, rather than mere stylistic glyph differences. For example, the shorter forms of arrows are often used in connection with limits, whereas the longer ones are associated with mappings. The use of the long arrows is so common that they were assigned entity names in the ISOAMSA entity set, one of the suite of mathematical symbol entity sets covered by the Unicode Standard.
