The second law is infamous in many circles other than thermodynamics because of its implications. Basically, it says that energy tends to cycle down towards heat, thereby increasing entropy. Taken to its natural conclusion, this means the universe will inevitably become a homogeneous soup of heat some day. This is called heat death.
