UNCA is a SLAC (as opposed to a BRU) with a large population of commuters and non-traditional students.
UNCA has a highly regarded humanitites program, which causes no end of misery to engineering students who would rather spend all their time integrating differential equations than think about politics, history, sociology, and questions like "why am I here?" and "why should I vote for you?"
Their undergraduate research program has also earned wide acclaim; the university spearheaded the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), and has several programs which aggressively encourage and even fund student research projects.
While UNCA lacks a football team, they are members of the Big South Conference and have been known to have competitive basketball and track teams.
