  • The customary symbol for the USD. By extension, anything to do with money (especially cash).
  • In BASIC, a suffix on a variable name denoting it's of string type.
  • In BBC BASIC, $1234 denotes the string at address 1234 (in practice, you'd use hexadecimal notation, of course). This is an accessor: it's also usable as an lvalue.
  • Common (but by no means universal!) prefix (especially in assembly) for hexadecimal numbers.
  • In Perl, a variable prefix denoting a scalar (think "$calar") -- a slot holding singular data.
