School zones were created to allow children walking to and from school the opportunity to cross surrounding streets safely. Good idea, poor implementation. After a group of cars goes through an intersection with a green light, and the light turns red, another group of cars is left waiting at that light. When that first group of cars hits a school zone, they are forced to slow down. By the time that each of the cars has slowed down sufficiently, that group of cars that had been waiting at the light before, has now had a chance to catch up. There is never a break in the traffic. Kids have no choice but to try and make their way across a never ending train of cars traveling at 20 miles an hour (a speed which is still fast enough to kill a kid).
