A small agricultural town of 2500 in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia.
The town was originally settled by German Lutherans and named Lobethal, meaning "Valley of Praise". During World War I, the anti-German feeling in Australia was such that the name of the town was changed to Tweedville in 1917. The name was reverted to Lobethal in 1935.
Currently Lobethal is well known for the Festival of Lights, where most of the town decorates their homes and business' with Christmas lights over the month of December. Bus-loads of tourists come from all over the state to see the Festival, and because of the influx of traffic, many of the town's roads are turned into one way streets in the night hours. During this period up until Christmas Day, the local Lutheran church puts on a living nativity play, with up to 3 performances every night.
