Insulin is a protein consisting of two amino acid chains joined by two disulfide cross-linkages. It is secreted by the beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas .

Effects of insulin:

causes the liver to take up glucose from the blood and convert it to glycogen
causes skeletal muscle to take up amino acids and glucose to convert to protein and glycogen respectively
causes the deposition of fat in adipose tissues

In short, insulin brings down the blood glucose level.
