The aim of general anaesthesia is to induce an altered physiological state such that there is:

  1. loss of consciousness and amnesia
  2. analgesia of the entire body
  3. some degree of muscle relaxation

Anaesthetic drugs used for general anaesthesia can be divided into induction agents and maintenance agents (there is quite some overlap) and muscle relaxants. These drugs can be intravenous anaesthetics or inhalational anaesthetics.
