Virchow's triad (idea)

Rudolf Virchow postulated three factors that predisposed to venous thrombosis:

1. local trauma to the vessel wall
2. stasis (of blood flow)
3. hypercoagulability (of the blood)

Stated another way, they are:

i) trouble with the vessel
ii) trouble with the flow
iii) trouble with the blood itself.
