A city of roughly 80,000 inhabitants in Kosovo divided along ethnic lines. The ethnic Albanians live on the south side of the Ibar River and the Serbs live on the north side. There are frequent clashes between the two groups and with the French, whose job it is to separate them. Some in KFOR have gone as far to accuse the French of being soft on the Serbs, as they do not confiscate weapons as often as soldiers of other nationalities do. Although the French historically were sympathetic with the Serbs, they simply hold a different philosophy when it comes to peacekeeping; they intend to instill a feeling of safety into this beleagured enclave. The city and its heavily guarded bridge have come to symbolize deeply rooted ethnic hatred that still haunts areas of Europe.
