French aristocrat, the
Marquis de Cherisey. Claimed to be of
Merovingian
decent, and together with
Pierre Plantard was behind the 20th century revival
of the
Priory of Sion.
Evidence suggests that the Sauniere Documents, supposedly found by
Berenger Sauniere in 1891, are in fact forgeries made by de Cherisey in the
mid-50's. As many authors have used these documents as evidence, this deals a
severe blow to the Priory of Sion / Rennes-le-Chateau conspiracy theory.
