Tribute in Light: World Trade Centre Memorial
Two fifty-foot wide columns of light which shine up into the sky for miles above
Manhattan from
Ground Zero. This is intended as a temporary
memorial which will be turned on for 32 days starting on the six-month
anniversary of the
terrorist attacks.
It is expected that the searchlight beams will be visible even during the day thanks to impurities in the air. The lights will be switched off at 11pm every night, (so as not to affect peoples sleep), and at certain other times if they create too much glare for pilots.
The Tribute in Light will literally fill the void left by the destruction of the World Trade Centre on September 11th, 2001.
