Japanese paper dolls. An amazing handicraft that has been around for centuries, the practice of making washi ningyo is nearly dying out. Made of beautiful paper, these three-dimensional dolls range from simple and geometric (mostly made by folding) to incredibly detailed and realistic (made by folding, twisting, and even sewing). The detailed dolls even have elaborate wigs made from shredded paper, and are quite stunning. Works of art, the more elaborate are not meant as playthings. Most commonly these represent lovely geisha and noblewomen in furisode and ju-ni hitoe, though samurai appear sometimes.
